Week 7

Week 7: February 14th-20th

This week was the worst week ever (as far as contributing to my internship).  I feel terrible!  It was such a hectic week!  Valentines Day on Monday, from Wednesday to Sunday I puppysat Molly, and on Saturday we had to put the family dog Cody down.  It was the worst thing I’ve EVER had to do!  I am going to have to bust my butt next week to make up for this week!

Now and Later

Describe the relationship between what you are doing in this job and how you see your future in this field.

When I shadowed Paula Wessells and Christian McPherson I took so much away from it.  I will use everything they have taught me! I would absolutely love to work for Spot and be their photographer.  I think it’d be awesome to shoot for their covers.

The man on the street stuff isn’t my favorite.  I’m not comfortable shooting strangers on the spot.  It is however teaching me to be more confident.  As far as any future in this field, it is a good tool to use but I don’t think I will be doing much in the video field.

Week 6

Week 6: February 7th-13th

-This week was a lot of behind the scenes stuff…  Emailing, meetings, uploading images.

Update…

Progress check:  I feel I am doing well and learning a lot.  I am chugging along through my objectives.  I’ve also found that networking is everything!!! It’s not necessarily what you know but who you know.

Objectives:

- Learn how the magazine works...  I’m getting there.  I’ve found that there is soooo much to do to keep it going!

- Find my style within shooting for Spot…  I shoot up close and personal!  So you can see every detail.

-Be more confident in myself… This has increased significantly!  But I could still be more confident!

-Be more comfortable with equipment… Greatly increased but always room for more improvement.

Week 5

Week 5: January 31st – February 6th

— This was a pretty eventful week!

Sunday I was up in Bonney Lake, Washington ALL day.  It was quite a drive but well worth it.  I photographed the foster Bulldogs of Cascade Bulldog Rescue for my Advanced Photography Project Class but I think it would be awesome to put these on Spot’s website to help out the rescue!!! J   I would love to work with Lou and Cindy again!! They are awesome and I love to do all that I can to help out a Bulldog in need!!  Cascade Bulldog Rescue ended up using my photo of Cletus and Chloe for their website!!!

Thursday night I attended the Feb.Mutt Mixer at Hotel Monaco.  I honestly had no idea what to expect.  Lancea had warned me that it didn’t have the best lighting.  I brought a Canon speedlite to help out with the light but just couldn’t get it to work for me.  Paula Wessells was there and tried to help me with it, but even she couldn’t figure it out! I don’t know what it was!  I was super nervous about the lighting but the shots didn’t turn out too bad.  I definitely need to practice for next month!  All in all the event was amazing!  I was super nervous at first but Lancea helped me out and was very encouraging!  Plus everyone LOVED having their doggie’s photo taken!

Week 4

Week 4:  January 24th – 30th

— This week was super busy!

Tuesday I shadowed Paula Wessells when she did a shoot with Dachshund Zoey.  I absolutely love working with Paula!!  I always take away so much from the shoot whether it be a little tip on how to handle the dog or local pet photographers that I should check out.

Friday I shot Spot product with Lancea.  I was so nervous because this was my first shoot where I was the one and only photographer.  Not to mention I was under the impression that there were some White Lightning lights in the studio but there was only Elenchrome equipment available at that time.  I’ve used it a few times before but I am way more comfortable with the White Lightning stuff.  So I was even more nervous!  But I figured it out and made it work.  Lancea was so patient with me and the shots turned out pretty good.

Saturday I had the March Spot cover shoot with Christiaan McPherson (it was going to be on Thursday but was switched to Saturday because we needed gray/wet weather.) We met up at 11:00 a.m. at Mt. Tabor.  Christiaan shot a man on his mountain bike with his Doberman named Che and Chocolate Lab Pedro.  We had a hard time meeting up because only Christiaan had been there before. I learned how important communication is and that you not only have to interact with the pet but also the owner.  I was kind of nervous to offer suggestions to Christiaan because I didn’t want to feel out of place as an assistant. All in all, the shoot went pretty well.

Weeks 2 & 3

 Week 2: January 10th – 16th

— This week was amazing! The Beagle photo shoot (Feb. cover for Spot Magazine) with Paula Wessells of Doxzen Pet Photos was such a great learning experience!  Pet photography is a whole new world!  You have to interact with both the owner and the pet.  You need the pet to be comfortable with you and your camera.  Paula showed me lots of different tricks to get and keep the pets’ attention.  It was a very successful shoot!  I really connected with Paula.  She is keeping in contact with me and I will be assisting her on future pet photo shoots! J

Week 3: January 17th – 23rd

— This week was kind of a blur!  It went by super fast!  It was cut short by Martin Luther King Day and my vacation at the end of the week.  This week I learned that contacting people is a big part of taking up your time, but that it is a very important part of everything!  It’s how it all starts!
