Greenhill's Annual Kitten Shower

Greenhill's Annual Kitten Shower

This is a free event, however, we invite guests to bring a gift for the kittens. Please check our gift registry for items needed at https://www.babylist.com/kittens-GreenhillHumaneSociety.

Summer is here and so are the kittens! Hundreds of kittens will arrive at Greenhill during this year’s Kitten Season and the community’s help is needed! On Saturday, June 22 from 11 am to 2 pm Greenhill will host a Kitten Shower Adoption Event and Supply Drive. Visitors are invited to meet numerous kittens looking for their fur-ever homes, learn about becoming a volunteer or foster family and enjoy some serious kitten cuddles!

Guests are invited to bring an item from the gift registry. The items listed on the registry are vital supplies Greenhill needs to help care for these kittens. Last year, Greenhill’s foster families cared for 474 kittens and the number is expected to increase this year. Very young kittens are first fostered by one of our 116 foster care families until the kittens are old enough to be adopted. This is typically between 4 to 8 weeks of age after getting vaccinated and spayed or neutered.

Greenhill provides the needed supplies to the foster families. Many kittens are so young their eyes are not yet open, and they need to be bottle fed every two hours. They also require gentle handling and socialization. This helps to build their confidence and comfort around people.

All kitten and adult cat adoptions include: a physical exam and behavioral evaluation by a trained staff, spay/neuter surgery, vaccinations, flea and worm treatment, a collar and ID tag, pre-adoption consultation, trackable microchip, 30 day trial of pet insurance, post-adoption support. All cats must be transported home in a carrier (available to purchase for $5) and if it is not a good fit, new pets can be returned to Greenhill at any time.

For more information about Greenhill and the Kitten Shower, please visit https://www.green-hill.org.

Pet Samaritan's Grand Re-Opening

Pet Samaritan, One of Portland’s Oldest Veterinary Clinics, Celebrates Centennial Grand Re-Opening with Commissioner Amanda Fritz and Pledge of Free Care for 100 Pets

100 years after opening, the clinic renews its commitment to serving Laurelhurst and the surrounding neighborhoods with a grand opening of new facility. Pet Samaritan Clinic will unveil its new state-of-the-art veterinary clinic on June 29, just steps away from the historic little red brick building where it has served the community’s families and pets with compassionate care since the early 1900s. Humans of all ages and their beloved fur babies are invited to join in the festivities, as Portland Commissioner Amanda Fritz helps celebrate Pet Samaritan’s legacy.

In the 1920s, Founder C.F. Milleson advertised Pet Samaritan as the “only hospital in Portland specializing in Dog Practice.” In the 1980s, under the leadership of Dr. Patricia Huff, Pet Samaritan was one of the only small and exotic veterinary practices in the area. Dr. Huff is remembered for her heart to serve the homeless, often going into the community to vaccinate pets for parvo during outbreaks. The new facility, located directly across the street from the iconic former location, continues the legacy of progressive medicine, featuring a new special procedures suite, advanced dentistry, endoscopy and design elements to enhance the client and patient experience. “Over the past 100 years, we’ve had the joy and honor of serving thousands of pets in the community,” said Hospital Manager Jennifer Robinson. “Our new facility ensures we’ll be able to continue to provide progressive and loving care for the next 100 years!”

The public is invited to help celebrate this historic occasion with festivities for the whole family and their fur babies. Activities include giveaways, a teddy bear clinic, face painting, photo booth, balloon artist, refreshments, hospital tours and veterinarian meet & greets.

Commissioner Fritz will do the ribbon-cutting at 2:30.

The grand opening is at 2480 E. Burnside St. across the street from the previous red brick building location.
· Free to the public; open to all ages!

Portland Starlight Parade

A free annual event through the streets of downtown Portland. Oregon Humane Society’s float will feature the Royal Canine Court. One of our most popular events, the Portland General Electric/SOLVE Starlight Parade offers funky, eclectic fun for everyone. From traditional marching bands and flood-lit floats, to glow-in-the-dark umbrellas and unique hand-built entries, you’ll see the best of Portland’s diverse community groups (and surrounding Northwest region) together in one whimsical pageant. 2019 makes for an exciting Starlight Parade as it celebrates more than 40 years in the city of Portland!

The Starlight Parade continues a longtime festival tradition from the early 1900s, when illuminated floats built on electric trolley cars made their way through the city on trolley tracks. Today, participants light up the night with approximately 100 illuminated entries along a 2.25-mile route. The parade draws more than 325,000 spectators to downtown Portland, and is also broadcast live from 9:00 – 11:00 p.m. on FOX 12. Don’t miss the fun of one of the Rose Festival’s best and brightest traditions!

The Portland General Electric/SOLVE Starlight Parade will begin at 8:30 p.m. on June 1, 2019.

Paws on the Plaza for Bonnie Hays Animal Shelter

This is a family-friendly event to benefit the shelter and its services. Paws on the Plaza is at the Hillsboro Tuesday Night Market on Main street.

Getting Here

The Hillsboro Tuesday Night Market fills three city blocks in Historic Downtown Hillsboro that are closed to auto traffic (Main Street from First to Third Avenues, and Second and Third Avenues between Main and Lincoln Streets).

There is a variety of street parking and lots and the market is easily accessible by MAX and bus.

Activities

We will offer a variety of activities:

  • Contests! These have been a popular feature of past events and we are looking forward to continuing them this year. The contests will start at 7:00 pm. These are fun for spectators as well as participants. Bring your dog and enter for a chance to win!

    • Best Costume

    • Best Trick

    • Best Owner/Dog Look Alike

    • Biggest Dog

    • Littlest Dog (over one year)

  • Raffle

  • Check Your Chip

  • Dog Licensing

Shelter Fundraising and Donations

Although Paws on the Plaza is free to attend, we hope that those who can give something to the animals will help support our work with a donation. We will have a variety of ways for people to give (including a raffle!) at the event. If you want to donate prizes or partner with us to fundraise for the animals on behalf of Paws on the Plaza, please contactJennifer_Keene@co.washington.or.us

The Hillsboro Tuesday Night Market is a bustling outdoor festival with food vendors, produce stands, artisan vendors, classic cars, musical entertainment and more.

While the market is dog friendly and we would love to meet you and your pooch on the plaza, it is important that each owner makes an informed decision about whether their own dog will be comfortable at a crowded event with kids, other dogs, and unfamiliar people. For some dogs, it could be frightening, and others might feel overstimulated or defensive. If you are in doubt, leave your dog at home or be prepared to depart if they seem anxious or agitated.

Paint Your Pet Sunday

Paint Your Pet Sunday

Show some love for your furry best friends, and help out animals in need at the same time!
Email a photo of your pet to vancouverartspace@gmail.com The photo will be then be transferred on to a 12x12 or 11x14 canvas and will be ready for you to paint when you come in.
The price of the event includes transfer, canvas, paint, and instruction. In addition, 10% of proceeds from all Paint-Your-Pet Sundays will be donated to the Humane Society for Southwest Washington.
As much as we love all animals, due to the limited size of our space (and the coming & going of other individuals who may be allergic) we recommend that you leave your pet at home. Although they will miss you at first, once they see your masterpiece when you come back they'll forgive you for leaving them behind!
